Summary:
Improved navigation in view window

Detailed description
Couple of observations on the ease of navigation within the view window of OpenSim (particularly from the perspective of someone used to using other packages).

The first is that both my laptop and its external mice only have two buttons. I thus don't have the ability to translate in the view window. The packages I am used to using allow dragging with left and right buttons clicked and held simultaneously to translate. Could this be added (if only to save me the cost of a new mouse!).

As far as I can see navigation is only about the "origin" of the view window. This can make navigation clunky about specific bones. For example in Tutorial 2 it is difficult to navigate to get good views of the wrist when all the roations occur about the shoulder joint. In the package I'm used toi using you can select a segment and then navigation is based on the origin of that segment. I could thus select one of the bones of the hand and then navigate around it rather than around the shoulder joint.

Finally, I assume other users might have similar feature requests but I can't see a sensible way to search the request database to see if others have reported similar requests and/or whether these have been flagged for development.

This is my first exposure to OpenSim. It looks like a great tool. well done.

Ported from another feature request:
- ABAQUS has a feature we like that shows you a circle when
>rotating an object that makes orienting objects in the window much
>easier. Could OpenSim have something similar? I believe this's called "Orbit"
in ACAD.

Dear Richard,

Thanks for the detailed and excellent feedback. Surely appreciated.

Regarding improved navigation on a laptop. If you use shift with left mouse button then you can pan the view and so you can navigate easily without needing a 3-button mouse (I do that all the time on my laptop but blame the lack of dcumentation on our side. Sorry about that.

As to re-centering the view around an object and making its origin the focal point of the camera, I'm pleased to tell you that it's already there though undocumented. If you select an object (using ctrl+Left-mouse) and press "r" then the view is centered around the selected object.

I'm in the process of writing a quick reference for OpenSim and I'll make sure these features are clearly documented.

Thanks for taking the time to provide us feedback and I hope your experience with OpenSim has been positive.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Best,
-Ayman
