Notes

The purpose of this definition is to serve as a reference point for the definition of "multiscale." Usage in biomedical arena can refer to either: 1) Temporal Scales, which usually reflects a progressive aggregation of metric labels, 2) Spatial Scales, which usually reflect a progressive aggregation of metric labels, or 3) Scales of Organization, which implies some lumping of a particular set of phenomena using some defined membership criteria. A common example of Scales of Organization as applied to biological objects would be: Molecules to Cells to Tissues to Organs to Organism to Population of Organisms. Note that it is possible to conceive that all higher scales could be represented by some means of aggregation of lower scales.
