  * Success stories?? Scientific crowd first (people who use data first); clinical crowd later. Main outcomes of a meeting is to encourage people to get involved also regulatory.
  * How can we involve community in intermediate projects?
  * Outreach as in NSF (Pete), summer camp
  * National biomechanics day (Thor) - Paul deVita does it through ISB
  * The group discussed staging of engagements with diverse communities. Scientific communities will be reached out first as these will be the users of the data and models. Clinical communities will be reached out later. Main outcome of engagements is to encourage people to get involved in the project, potentially in its various stages to repeat some of the modeling processes or at a regulatory capacity to compare model components.
  * Pete mentioned that he has been involved in outreach activities as part of NSF project. He has been contributing to a summer camp, which may be a venue to incorporate project related activities.
  * Thor mentioned National Biomechanics Day, which has been organized by Paul DeVita through ISB.

    • Disseminate project summary slides to be used in conference presentations.
  • Jason
    • Contact Farshid Guilak for potential submission of a perspective article to Journal of Biomechanics.
  • Pete
    • Reach out to Nico Verdonschot for promotion of the project at ORS 2018.
  • Carl
    • Follow up timeline for workshop proposals in ORS meetings.
  • Thor
    • Reach out to ISB for potential promotion of the project for community engagement.
  • All
    • Update calendars to accommodate meeting at ORS 2018.
    • Update calendars for next group meeting in Denver during December 2018.
    • Promote project in conference presentations using project summary slides.

Notes:

  1. The group followed up the discussions in previous meeting, see 2017-12-14-1000. Main focus was on outreach activities. The group mainly discussed upcoming group meetings, visibility through publications and in conferences and engagement with the community for involvement. More detailed notes are provided below.

  2. Ahmet summarized the discussions from previous meeting to Thor. Main topic of the previous meeting was the data sources and identification of data sets for use in the project.
  3. Upcoming group meetings.
    • The participants tried to identify where to gather and in what venues. The goal was to have a tentative plan for the next meeting.
    • An opportunity is to meet at the upcoming ORS meeting. ORS will be held during March 2018. It may be fast approaching to have an actual meeting with all collaborators. Nonetheless, the group decided that those who will attend the ORS can meet in person and Thor and Ahmet will join through Skype. This will be a good opportunity where teams can touch base around the same time during which the identification of data sets will be complete.
    • A full group meeting will be held a year from now. The teams will meet in Denver in December 2018. Thor is free after mid-October. All others' schedules are also flexible in December.
    • Thor mentioned that these meetings would be a nice opportunity for students to engage with other groups. One disadvantage is the possibility of cross-contamination between the workflow of the groups. Yet, given planned documentation of workflows, this can be managed (or at least justified). The possibility to connect students will be explored.
  4. Visibility in conferences.
    • Ahmet described his plans to promote the project in IMAG/MSM community and within the Committee on Credible Practice of Modeling and Simulation in Healthcare. In regard to the former, Multiscale Modeling Consortium meeting will be held during March; an abstract and a presentation related to the project is a possibility. In regard to the latter, Ahmet described the project in a previous Committee meeting; a webinar to the Committee about the project can be arranged.
    • Ahmet may also submit abstracts to BMES/FDA conference for a presentation. The dates for the conference has not been set yet. Usually, the call is in January and the conference is in May. An abstract to compare of how the project will address Ten Simple Rules of credible practice can be drafted.
    • Many upcoming meetings can be potential venues for the promotion of the project and engagement with the community. Thor will have a couple presentations in WCB 2018; he can promote the project with a few slides. ISB 2019 will be in Calgary. ASB 2018 will be in Mayo Clinic. Meeting of the Clinical Knee Society may be another venue. Carl is involved with an ACL interest community and will have presentations in New Zealand. All collaborators will insert a slide in their presentations for visibility. Ahmet will provide summary slides for the project for this purpose.
    • Scientific sessions and workshops can be organized in upcoming conferences to compare results and as a breakout for investigators. Given the projects status, it may be too early to organize these to convey project outcomes. At the moment, such sessions or presentations may be used to describe the project and look for potential contributors from the community, i.e. similar to Grand Knee Challenge. Both scientific and clinical communities will be targeted. Initially, scientific communities will serve the project for development of models. As project matures, reaching out to clinical communities will provide the opportunity for translation of models. Some venues include:
      • ORS, which will likely have submission proposals for workshops after its conference. Carl will keep an eye on the timing of workshop schedules. It is possible to implant the idea at ORS scientific program by session leaders. Nico Verdonschot is organizing a relevant session in ORS 2018. Pete will reach out to Nico about promoting our project on reproducibility in knee modeling.
      • SB3C, which does not have a separate meeting this summer (consolidated in WCB).
      • a special session in ISB 2019.
  5. Publications.
    • The group recognized that many manuscript opportunities exist as offshoot projects. Jason described his current focus on a manuscript that can serve as a perspective article on workflow variations in knee modeling. This manuscript can also promote the project for community engagement.
    • Jason has taken the lead on development of the perspective article. His initial activity was reviewing knee models to provide a cross-section of knee modeling from a historical perspective but more based on current models. The focus is on determining the process of modeling and simulation (based on what is described in the publication) rather than science conducted using the knee models. Using recent publication on considerations for reporting finite element analysis can be used to understand and summarize the process in a systematic manner.
    • Thor asked about the take home message. In response, Jason mentioned that the article can be a resource for modeling and simulation processes (and their variability), where important details can be presented in one place. Upon discussions, another possibility is to utilize this manuscript similar to Grand Knee Challenge articles, i.e. describing the problem, pointing out the data sources, benchmarks and potential engagement.
    • Carl noted that the proposed manuscript is in some sense similar to the specific aims page of the grant, i.e. justifying the need by illustrating the fragmentation in modeling and simulation workflows and proposing a project in response. It may be possible to constrain the scope of the manuscript to the workflows of contributing teams as early outcome from the grant perspective. This will still highlight the variability in the modeling processes and their potential impact on reproducibility.
    • Potential journals includ Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, or Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Given technical focus at the current state of the project, Journal of Biomechanics will be more appropriate. Editor's buy in will be important; Jason will reach out to Farshid Guilak (Editor, Journal of Biomechanics) to gauge interest level. Thor noted that it may be good if the target journal is also associated with conference. This is the case for JOR.
  6. Further engagement with the community.
    • The group discussed staging of engagements with diverse communities. Scientific communities will be reached out first as these will be the users of the data and models. Clinical communities will be reached out later. Main outcome of engagements is to encourage people to get involved in the project, potentially in its various stages to repeat some of the modeling processes or at a regulatory capacity to compare model components.
    • Pete mentioned that he has been involved in outreach activities as part of NSF project. He has been contributing to a summer camp, which may be a venue to incorporate project related activities.
    • Thor mentioned National Biomechanics Day, which has been organized by Paul DeVita through ISB.
