Recurring Meeting of Cleveland Clinic Core Team

Date: November 12, 2013

Time: 10:30 AM EST

Means: In person meeting

Attendees:

  1. Ahmet Erdemir
  2. Jason Halloran
  3. Craig Bennetts
  4. Snehal Chokhandre
  5. Robb Colbrunn
  6. Tara Bonner

Agenda:

  1. Discuss tasks progress (finalize specimen specification to order specimens).
  2. Discuss/finalize tissue testing equipment purchase.
  3. Decide tasks for the next meeting.
  4. Other.

Immediate Action Items:

See notes for details.

  • Jason

    • Update FEBio feature specifications for upcoming conference call with University of Utah.
  • Craig

    • Update cloud computing specifications for upcoming conference call with Stanford University.
  • Ahmet

    • Read joint testing specifications and make necessary edits.
  • Jason and Snehal

    • Prepare required information for practice imaging session at University Hospitals on November 14, 2013.
  • Robb and Tara

    • Discuss cost estimates for using current tissue testing equipment.

Notes:

  1. Discuss tasks progress (finalize specimen specification to order specimens).
    • Creation of task lists, tasks and wiki pages were clarified to facilitate use of infrastructure.
    • Specimen specifications.
      • Snehal ordered two specimens (elderly, male and female, hip to tip of toes). Radiographs will be obtained for the specimens before finalizing the purchase of specimens.
      • More specimens will be procured based on the specifications.
    • Imaging specifications.
      • Jason, Craig and Snehal will test a few imaging protocols with the group at the University Hospitals on Nov 14, 2013.
    • Registration and specimen preparation specifications.
      • Jason prepared a flowchart to describe the registration and coordinate system initialization workflow.
      • Some changes in terminology were suggested to clarify the flowchart, e.g., change Opto (Optotrack) to mocap (motion capture), move tranformation matrix definition T(Rob,Opto) to step 7, change Anat to Anati where i defines a time point, etc.
      • Linking across the registration and specimen preparation pages needs to be more clear. The specimen preparation page will be updated with all the information and registration calculation can be moved to the registration page.
      • End dates for relevant tasks to complete these specifications will be updated.
    • Joint testing specifications.
      • Various issues related to mechanical testing, e.g., pressure sensor calibration, Optotrak troubleshooting, etc., need to be resolved before the joint testing can be done successfully.
      • Target joint test date was moved to the last week of January 2014 or first week of February 2014.
      • Based on the timeline of the proposal, data from the first specimen need to be collected and disseminated, along with completion of modeling specifications, all by the end of first year (May 31, 2014). Additional specimens will be tested after development of the first model.
      • Specifications for the tibiofemoral joint testing are in usable form. Equipment use modes were added by Robb.
      • The term initialization will be changed to coordinate system optimization to avoid confusion with registration and specimen preparations specifications.

      • Repeatability testing stages were added to the tibiofemoral joint testing protocols.
      • Robb will provide naming convention for data collected using the robotics testing system.
      • Previously collected tibiofemoral joint stretching data will be analysed to assess the value of such protocols as secondary testing conditions. Using kinetics-kinematics for the joint and origin and insertion sites locations from MRI for the ligaments, ligament stiffness and slack length values may be estimated.
      • Patellofemoral joint testing information is mostly done. Ahmet needs to go over the information and make necessary updates.
      • Jason contacted Tekscan to get pricing information for sensor and software as well as potential hardware solutions for equivalencing, i.e., application of known uniform load on each sensel.
    • Test workflow for cloud computing prototype.
      • Craig is working on all the required scripts and will describe the scripts, sample model, and desired interface in the wiki.
      • The information needs to be updated before the upcoming conference call with Stanford University group.
    • Tissue testing specifications.
      • Snehal will test tendon specimens in the next couple of weeks; she is still trying to find samples.
      • Anterolateral ligament may be added as a secondary tissue.
  2. Discuss/finalize tissue testing equipment purchase.
    • Cost estimates are required for the Biomomentum Inc. machine for video synchronization and for force control upgrades.
    • Cost comparison was done for buying the equipment vs using an existing machine.
      • The estimated total cost for buying a machine that meets all our requirements is $46,000. Such a machine will be available for unlimited use and also for other projects.
      • Direct cost for testing minimum number of samples using an existing machine is $32,400 (+ an indirect cost of $18,954).
      • Robb and Tara will discuss these costs and inform the team about alternative strategies to use the existing machine.
    • Delivery and training time for a new machine can extend to 2-3 months.
  3. Decide tasks for the next meeting.
    • See Immediate Action Items above.
  4. Other.
    • A task was created to add imaging infrastructure.
    • A task will be assigned to the University of Utah group to create a wiki page for progress updates on the implementation of in situ strain feature in FEBio.
    • Robb created tasks for tracking verification of spatial registration protocols, which will be utilized in joint testing.
    • Team will meet to discuss the specimen transportation device design.
