Recurring Meeting of Cleveland Clinic - Stanford University

Date: July 16, 2014

Time: 4:00 PM EST

Means: Conference Call

Attendees:

  1. Ahmet Erdemir (Cleveland Clinic)
  2. Craig Bennetts (Cleveland Clinic)
  3. Joy Ku (Stanford University)
  4. Henry Kwong (Stanford University)

Agenda:

  1. Update on management strategies to establish quotas.
  2. Progress on administration interface development for cloud computing.
  3. Recap of WCB 2014.
  4. Decide action items for next meeting.
  5. Other.

Immediate Action Items:

  • Stanford University (Joy & Henry)

    • Provide timeline for launching of pilot cloud computing at Simtk site.
    • Inform Cleveland Clinic team on the progress of Simtk platform overhaul.
  • Cleveland Clinic (Ahmet & Craig)

    • Prepare Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 for cloud computing.

Notes:

  1. Update on management strategies to establish quotas.
    • Stanford University team has not worked on quota management strategies. Henry has been focusing on identifying a new platform for Simtk.org. It is likely that the new platform may have built in quota management. This will prevent independent development and maintenance by Simbios team to incorporate such features. Also see notes below for the other items.
  2. Progress on administration interface development for cloud computing.
    • Stanford University team has not worked on cloud computing administrating interface. Henry has been focusing on identifying a new platform for Simtk.org. Also see notes below for the other items.
    • Stanford University team has the intent to launch the cloud computing interface on Simtk.org site as a pilot. Cleveland Clinic group will prepare Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 to provide as part of this pilot launch. Joy and Henry will inform the Cleveland Clinic team about scheduling of this pilot launch.
  3. Recap of WCB 2014.
    • Simtk.org presentation at the World Congress of Biomechanics received many questions. Many interested parties also provided comments about the new initiatives of the infrastructure; in particular, those related to involving the community.
    • Joy and Ahmet also discussed model sharing initiatives (as part of publications) discussed in World Congress of Biomechanics. Simtk.org can provide the supporting infrastructure. Joy contacted Chris Jacobs (editor of Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering) in that regard. Ahmet will also follow up with Chris.
  4. Decide action items for next meeting.
    • Action items are discussed. See Immediate Action Items above.
  5. Other.
    • Henry has been focusing on identifying a new platform for Simtk.org. Ahmet raised concerns about the platform change; particularly related to links provided in publications to refer to projects or downloads in Simtk.org. Joy noted that any upgrade should accommodate appropriate links and the front end will be back compatible.
    • Ahmet wondered about platforms evaluated by the Stanford University team. Some already have cloud computing infrastructure, others have interfaces to git for source code repository. More contemporary platforms also support single sign-on, e.g. with a Google account. Old accounts can be consolidated with social networking accounts to support back compatibility. Fusionforge (forked and updated based on Gforge); Hubzero (for scientific communities, based on Joomla from Purdue University); Allura (based on Sourceforge) are all possible frameworks. Ahmet wondered about data management features. Stanford University is leaning away from NOSQL as most of Simtk.org data is relational. Hubzero has a data management feature based on csv files to generate a database. Ahmet reminded Midas Platform as a data management solution. While this is not a complete platform solution, it can be an adjunct to an existing one. Joy may want to talk to Will Schroeder of Kitware Inc. to discuss data management platforms.
    • Ahmet will be out of office during August. August meeting will be scheduled on a need basis.
