Immediate Action Items:

  • Update specifications pages in view of oks003 and oks006 experience.
  • Provide an outline for Journal of Knee Surgery manuscript based on simulations with Open Knee(s) - Generation 1.

Notes:

1. Discuss immediate action items from the last meeting.
   • Tara provided images of laxity data for oks003 on specimen wiki page.
   • Ahmet still needs to update any outstanding specifications.
   • Snehal needs to get freezer keys made.
   • Robb contacted facilities about plans against potential freezer failure. He is waiting for a response. The walk-in freezer is on the Clinic's alarm system (for automatic alerting of appropriate personnel); it has been failed twice in recent years. The freezer currently used by Open Knee(s) team in the robotics testing room is not on the Clinic's alarm system; rather it has a local alarm in case of failure. This freezer failed only once since its acquisition. The group may keep tissue samples in walk-in freezer to get informed in case of an after-hours failure and move specimens and samples to other freezers.
   • The group needs to upload experimentation photos from personal devices to the in-house data management system.
2. Discuss oks006 data.
   • Overall joint level testing of oks006 (imaging and joint mechanics) went well. All is expected to evaluate the notes in oks006 wiki page and add information if necessary.
   • Tara provided tibiofemoral joint laxity figures in the oks006 wiki page. Data seem to be in order.
   • Snehal will upload MR images to in-house data management system and provide samples in the specimen wiki page.
   • The specimen was dissected by Jack Andrish, who provided detailed identification and removal of many different tissue types. Cartilage dissection was moved to the following day, which seemed to be a good pace for future experimentation.
3. Discuss FE studies to utilize Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 model.
   • The group talked about using Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 model in a case study of pivot shift for an invited manuscript in the Journal of Knee Surgery. Responsibilities were delegated:
     • Ahmet will provide an outline of the study and manuscript.
     • Ahmet will also provide in the repository the Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 model he updated for FEBio v2.1.
     • Snehal will conduct simulations and lead writing.
     • Craig assist Snehal and will provide scripts to facilitate modeling and simulation.
     • Robb and Tara will provide background information on pivot shift testing and past studies. The team may want to reach out to Paul Saluan for his involvement.
4. Decide immediate action items for the next meeting.
   • See Immediate Action Items above.
5. Other.
   • The team discussed abstract submission plans for two upcoming conferences.
     • Craig and Tara will most likely go to the SB3C 2015. The conference is about the synergy between experimentation and modeling. Craig will submit an abstract on MR imaging of Open Knee(s) specimens. Tara will work on an abstract on tibiofemoral joint testing. Ahmet will meet with them for drafting of the abstracts. Other team members will also help if needed and confirm content for submissions.
     • For ASB 2015, it is likely that abstracts on patellofemoral joint testing, tissue testing, and cloud computing will be submitted.
   • Snehal will order two young and one mid-age specimen. This way, the Open Knee(s) specimen population can be increased to 10 samples. Testing will go through June 2015. After testing of 10 knees, the group may look for additional specimens for secondary conditions.
   • Ahmet informed the team members about his intention to get three summer students to start processing the Open Knee(s) data. Other groups may also be involved for utilization of Open Knee(s) data as well. Jason Halloran (from Cleveland State University) may have a student to work on patellofemoral joint modeling. Leonardo Ruggiero (from Belgium) may also start building models from scratch as part of a collaboration through his post-doctoral work.
   • Snehal noted that the tissue testing system crashed while collecting data on tensile specimens, which included image capture. Snehal tried four mock-up data collection attempts immediately after the crash (after rebooting computer) but the system crashed. Lately, she tried collecting data on a foam sample and the system worked.
   • Snehal reached out the imaging facility at the University Hospitals for payment of MRI time; she has not received a response yet.
   • Snehal is still interested in building an additional tissue thickness measurement system for convenience. The project's budget may accommodate this.
