Immediate Action Items:
- Cleveland Clinic (Ahmet)

- University of Utah (Jeff)
- Review in situ strain feature documentation.
- Recap new shell element formulations for possible implementation in FEBio.
- University of Utah (Steve)
- Document and disseminate in situ strain feature with examples.
- Evaluate discrete element analysis formulation for FEBio.
Notes:
- Discuss immediate action items from the last meeting.
- Ahmet informed the team that Joy Ku, from Stanford University, will join the next conference call scheduled for May 11, 2016.
- The group had a recap on new shell element formulations for possible implementation in FEBio. Jeff did not have a chance to evaluate formulations available in literature. Recently, Steve has done some work with shells in relevance to analysis of cortical bone. He noted that current FEBio formulations are not ideal for thick shells. New formulations will be needed to model cartilage and skin and therefore decrease computational cost (when compared to their volume representation). For cartilage, Jeff indicated the possibility to use discrete element analysis. For cartilage, Ahmet noted potential issues with discrete element analysis with meniscus representation. Previously, Steve put together some code allowing contact between surfaces with each side having their own thickness implementation. He noted that this code is not in FEBio but he will explore the possibility to port it.
- Steve mentioned that contact formulation changes to accommodate shell elements will not be trivial. It may require separate contact formulation for shells or incorporating of contact into shell element formulation.
- In situ strain plug in documentation.
- The in situ strain feature manuscript was accepted. Steve submitted an updated version of the documentation on the use of in situ strain feature; Ahmet and Jeff will evaluate it. Ahmet asked if the documentation and plugin was available to the public. Steve noted that the hold up has been the distribution of FEBio version 2.5, which is needed for the use of in situ strain plug in. Ahmet recommended that the manuscript should provide information on where to access the plug in and the documentation of the feature should indicated version of FEBio to plug in is compatible with. Jeff and Ahmet also recommended to provide examples in the plug in site to facilitate the adaptation of the feature.
- Decide action items for next meeting.
- See Immediate Action Items above.
- Other.
- Ahmet will prepare the progress report soon. He asked Jeff about his other support information; no changes were noted.
- Jeff asked Ahmet about plans to submit a renewal application. Ahmet does not foresee a submission before Fall 2016. Jeff noted that they will be happy to provide preliminary data.
