Weekly Update in lieu of Recurring Meeting of Cleveland Clinic Core Team

Notes:

  1. Tissue testing.
    • Snehal received a trial knee specimen (78 years old, male) from Anatomy Gifts Registry. The specimen was dissected and all the major tissues were harvested and stored in the freezer until further testing. On visual inspection, the cartilage looked degenerated in many locations. Medial meniscus also had what appeared to be calcification (granular deposits).
    • Prototype lab delivered the new confined compression chamber for meniscus (5mm by 5 mm), and the associated filter along with a confined compression indenter with 3mm diameter.
    • A sample test was conducted to ensure the operation of the updated preconditioning protocol on Mach-1 and to evaluate the Python analysis script; both worked as anticipated. See sample results in the unconfined compression test dashboard on ExperimentationTissueMechanics Wiki page. Appropriate changes were made to cartilage preconditioning specifications.

    • Snehal also started the cartilage repeatability tests for the 78 yr old specimen. Two full tests were conducted in a day with one hour wait between tests. These tests were conducted with the updated preconditioning step and full 30 min hold after each ramp step. The two tests did not appear to be repeatable (see dashboard for details). This was an unexpected result as cartilage tests have consistently been repeatable.
    • Ahmet suggested that the same sample should be tested multiple times over a few days without any changes to assess whether there is a trend in the behavior over multiple tests. Once this sample is tested, other factors to be evaluated are time between tests, sample thickness changes over time (for current sample, same thickness value is used for all tests).
    • Snehal was still working on literature review.
  2. Data manuscripts.
    • No progress.
  3. Segmentation.
    • No progress.
  4. Other.
    • None noted.
