Conference Call Nov 9, 2006

Present
CCF: TonVanDenBogert, AhmetErdemir, PavanaSirimamilla

Utah: JeffWeiss, BenEllis

Stanford: ScottDelp

1. Demonstration of project Wiki (Ahmet)
Ahmet demonstrated the MoinMoin wiki at http://thrace.lerner.ccf.org. It was agreed that this is an effective collaboration tool, but the CCF firewall will require VPN access for outside collaborators which is cumbersome.

2. Suggestions for collaboration using Simtk (Wiki and webcast servers) (Ahmet)
Scott supported the suggestion to host a Wiki server on Simtk.org. This will eliminate the firewall problem. Hosting a webconference system (e.g. webhuddle) will also be considered.

Action: Scott to have Simtk administrator contact Ahmet.

3. Update on postdoc recruitment (Ton)
Postdoc position was offered to Jason Halloran (University of Denver) and his response is expected within a week. If he accepts, he starts March 1st. Second ranked is Jiang Yao (U. Rochester). Both have FE background, excellent recommendations and came for interviews which went well. We have enough funds to hire a second postdoc (which will be shared with Stanford). We are considering Marko Ackermann (Stuttgart, musculoskeletal modeling, optimal control) and Gilles ? (Geneva, computer science, animation). We still need recommendations for Gilles and have not done interviews with them.

Scott mentioned that Rick Neptune's collaboration grant was funded, which offers the opportunity for a full time Stanford postdoc being shared between the two projects. We will consider this.

4. Organization of subprojects (Ton)

This was shown on the MoinMoin main project page. Briefly: 2D modeling will be done at CCF so we can keep busy and investigate algorithms with existing models and tools before we have the extra postdoc manpower. The Utah team will start immediately on a 3D foot model.

Action: Ahmet will send Jeff and Ben 3D surface data and some initial meshing.

5. Nike3D - ABAQUS compatibility (Ahmet)
Ahmet wanted to know about NIKE3D capabilities for entering bone motion as input. Jeff explained that there is a general 6DOF rigid body motion input. This will allow simulating the joints in the foot model so that they are identical to the joints in the musculoskeletal model.

6. FE history dependence issue (Ton)
This was shown on the MoinMoin page FEAHistoryDependence and the example with the 2D foot model. After some discussion, the problem was understood and recognized as a fundamental issue which also will occur when we have viscoelastic tissue properties. Almost certainly we will not be able to model the foot as a multi-dof elastic system Q = f(q). We will get Al involved in this.

7. Other
The first team meeting will be Jan 31-Feb 1 in Salt Lake City. Jeff will make arrangements.
