Exporting model to COMSOL for analysis

Post by Gurpreet Singh » Thu Nov 23, 2017 12:56 am

I wish to export the solid arterial model created from DICOM image to COMSOL for analysis. I have exported the model file into .stl format but its not working in COMSOL. SolidWorks is opening the .stl file but it is unable to convert it into other usable formats. Can anyone suggest something on this?

Hi Gurpreet,

It would help us answer your question if you can provide some more information.

When you say it doesn't work with COMSOL, what do you mean specifically? How are you loading the model into COMSOL, are you getting an error message, if so what is the message?

Additionally can you let us know how you created the model?

As something to try you could try importing the .stl file into paraview and seeing if that also gives an error.

Hi Gabriel,

I created a 3-D model using SVProject sample image and th Quick Guide instructions on SIMVascular website. Then I exported the 3-D model into .stl format(Model<Export Solid Model<(File_name).stl)

Then I opened the the .stl model file in SolidWorks and tried to save it in other formats e.g. .igs, Parasolid, etc but it shows an error message that "The operation is invalid".

Also when I am trying to import the .stl model file in COMSOL, it shows the error message that the "Face cannot be parametrized".

And it does not give an error in Paraview.

It could be that solidworks is not able to handle the model you have created, see http://help.solidworks.com/2012/english ... cd8cf9eda3

and https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/16410

Can you attach pictures of your model?

As an additional check to see if your model is correct you can try meshing it with SimVascular, if this fails it means your model may not be a closed solid or does not have sufficient quality/smoothness.

Hi Gabriel,

When I am trying to convert the .stl image into parasolid file using the 'SAVE AS' option in File menu, it shows this error message:

And when I am trying to convert the .stl image into .igs file using the 'SAVE AS' option in File menu, it shows this error message:
