Hello,

I have downloaded febio 1.2 but when I type in the commad as shown in the guide the window closes (I think the program crashes). I am running it on a 64 bit windows 7 pc. What should I do please?

Hi Dilen,

First, I advise you to get FEBio 1.3.0. Open Knee simulations were conducted using that version. There is no guarantee that it will solve with an older version.

About using FEBio on 64 bit Windows 7 PC, I am afraid we didn't test the Open Knee model and FEBio on that platform as we don't have access to it. Nonetheless, I suspect that if FEBio works on that platform, Open Knee should run with it, too. You may want to check FEBio forums related to Windows 7; one example is at:

Hi Dilen,

You should first, as Ahmet advised, download and install an FEBio version 1.3.0+. On Windows, if you're going to try to run FEBio from anywhere other than its install directory, you'll need to add it to the system path. Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables, I believe. I suspect this is why you see the window close behavior.

Hi Dilen,

You need to provide the name of the Open Knee input file in FEBio format, which should be tf_joint.feb. If this doesn't work, you may need to provide the whole path of the file.

Hi Dilen,

You should consult the FEBio User's Manual to understand how execution works. For normal mode it will be febio -i tf_joint.feb. To execute FEBio from a directory other than the install location, you'll need to add the executable location to the system path on windows.

Is there a way to simulate that model in Abaqus or Ansys please?

The mesh file is in Abaqus native format that can be imported into Abaqus CAE. However, the user needs to define all other model components (material properties, contact definitions, etc.). While we have access to Abaqus, we did not have a chance to port the model to that solver platform yet. We don't have any experience with Ansys nor access to it, therefore we did not invest into it.

I would also like to mention that the reason we choose FEBio was the possibility for everyone to access to it as it is distributed freely for academic research purposes.
