Scaling - Run button greyed

Post by Cobus Muller » Thu Oct 24, 2013 2:41 am

Dear Community,
I am trying to run a scaling procedure by means of the Scale Tool gui. I have composed my own markerset and scale *.xml files using the files of the gait 2392 model as blueprint. I am using the motion file (*.trc) provided with the 5th grand challenge dataset. It seems that everything uploads correctly based on that I do not receive any errors in the messages window. I am however unable to run the Scale tool - Run button greyed... See attached screenshots.

I am running OpenSIM 3.1 on a Win 7 64bit machine.

Any help will be appreciated.

All the best,
Cobus

Hi Cobus

The GUI usually does that when there is an error in one of your XML files. This usually shows up in red when one of the files hasn't loaded or there is a syntax error etc.

Everything seems alright on the settings tab, check that your Scale Factors and Static Pose Weights are all loading correctly.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Shaun

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for the prompt response. I went through the Scale Factors and Static Pose Weights and found the error. There were two markers not defined in the model. I disabled these two markers and the Scale function is running now. The resulkt is however less than ideal. It seems the orientation in the marker set is not equivalent to the model space. Another possible issue might be the difference between the model's (m) and markerset's (mm) Unit. Is it correct to change the model's preffered length unit from meter to millimeter?
Thanks for your help,
Cobus

Hi Cobus,
Scaling can take some tweaking to get correct. There are some Video tutorials located at this link;
http://simtk-confluence.stanford.edu:80 ... th+Scaling

One way I get better results is to line up the scaled (but not moved) model against the collected marker data and reorient the model markers to get a decent match. If you dont do this, and there is a big difference between the experimental markers (on the subject) and model marker locations, you will get a poor IK solution.

Hi James,
Thanks for the advice. I changed the orientation of the markers and got a reasonable result. I realise now that you need to choose the marker pairs to which each body segment must scale carefully. I guess the choice of which marker pairs to use must be verified through an iterative procedure. The software does seem to be quite robust: Even though my scaling was not completely correct, a inverse kinematics simulation on the scaled model did produce reasonable results.
All the best,
Cobus
