OpenSim 3.1 Both Legs No Bones

Post by Martin Shenton » Tue Mar 18, 2014 7:53 am

We've installed OpenSim 3.1 onto Windows 7 (64bit) desktops within Active Directory, that are accessed by students with user rights. The program runs but the "Both Legs with Muscles" model does not display the bones, only the muscles, when logged in as a user. I thought this was an issue with permissions but I've found that the bones are only displayed for the administrator account that originally installed the software, another account with full administatrator rights will not see the bones. I've replicated these results on several PCs using different administrator accounts to run the install. Is this a known bug in the software?

Dear Martin,

From the symptoms you describe it seems like the environment variable OPENSIM_HOME is not set correctly except for the admin user who installed the software. If you have a way to set environment variables for your users that should take care of the issue. If you can't, there are other solutions for example, start the application from a batch file that sets the environment variable OPENSIM_HOME to the top level installation directory as seen by students. You can also change the Preference->Geometry Path to point to the top level install directory. The environment variable is used in the application to locate geometry files, and other resources so it'd be good to have it set even though some parts of the application would still work without it.

Please let me know how that goes,
-Ayman

Ayman,

Thanks very much for the swift response, setting the environment variable for all users fixed the problem.
