OpenSim 4.1 issue with Win7-v64 machines: FILE tab remains unresponsive

Post by Kaushik Mukherjee » Mon Jun 01, 2020 1:58 am

Hello experts,

I am facing this strange issue with OpenSim4.1 installation. I tried to install OpenSim 4.1 on three different computers (Two with Win7 v64 OS; one with Win10 OS). In all the three cases, found the same error initially. It appears twice during the launch of OpenSim. Upon clicking OK, the error message disappears and the OpenSim window comes up. However, the FILE tab seems to be unresponsive (nothing happens when I click the FILE tab). I can not also open/load any model. Checked the bin folder and found the osimJavaJNI in all cases.

In the Win10 machine, I added OPENSIM_HOME as user and system variables (with a path of C:\OpenSim 4.1) in the environmental variable list and this solved the problem. However, tried the same on Win7 machines and failed. In the Win7 v64 machine, I also added \bin to the PATH (making it C:\OpenSim 4.1\bin), but that did not help either. Changed the backward slash to forward slash with no luck! Any help on how to resolve this issue in case of Win7-v64 machines?

P.S.: I did everything with administrator right.

With best regards,
Kaushik

Hello Kaushik,

Since Microsoft dropped support for Win7, we have no Win7 machines to try this on, and we don't build on Win7 machines. Is there a reason not to upgrade to Win10?

If you can't upgrade, my conjecture is that the issue has to do with runtime libraries that OpenSim depends on that may not be available on your Win7 machines. These are typically placed on the machine at the end of installation by running the bin/vcredist_x64.exe. You could try to run this executable manually and retry starting the application.
If that fails you can run one of the utility programs from the command line (e.g. opensim-cmd) to see if you get more detailed error message regarding missing libraries.

Best of luck and please let us know how that goes,
-Ayman

Hello Ayman,

Thanks for your reply. The reason for not upgrading to win10 is that both the systems are around a decade old and are not just willing to die. The motherboards of these two systems are not compatible with win10. So, I am still using these. But definitely, I am planning to have new system soon.

Now, coming to the update: the good news is that the problem is resolved. This issue was with installing Visual C++ redist 2017 (bin/vcredist_x64.exe). It was giving me an error 0x80240017. Therefore, first I installed Service Pack 1 (by downloading windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe from https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/downloa ... px?id=5842) and then successfully installed Visual C++ redist 2017 (bin/vcredist_x64.exe). This solved the whole issue. Now OpenSim 4.1 is working properly in my win7 machines.

Thank you once again!

Best regards,
Kaushik
