error with starting Opensim

Post by w d » Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:25 am

When I start the program Opensom, I get the error:

"A java.lang.NullPointerException exception has occurred.
Click Show Details or see the messages.log file located in your C:\Users\Wimzie\AppData\Roaming\.opensim\1.9.1\var\log folder."

When I start the programma Opensim by opening a OSIM file, I get another error:

"Cannot find java.exe in jdk\..."

I can't open Opensim, it always generates an error. I have reinstalled it twice and it still doens't work. My computer works with Windows 7.
Can someone please help me?

Ayman,

I downloaded the java update mentioned in the other topic. Then I wanted to proceed with step 2:

"2) edit the opensim.conf file under your installation to use this jre (above e.g. location
jdkhome="C:\Program Files\Java\jre6")."

I have no idea what you mean by this. Can you explain to my in detail what I have to do? (I found the opensim.conf file but I don't understand what I have to do with it)

Thx

Wim

When you open your opensim.conf file using a text editor like notepad, you should have a couple lines in it that say something like this:

# default location of JDK/JRE, can be overridden by using --jdkhome <dir> switch
jdkhome="jdk"

I think he is saying to change it so it says this:

# default location of JDK/JRE, can be overridden by using --jdkhome <dir> switch
jdkhome="C:\Program Files\Java\jre6"

Thanks Chris, that's exactly what the instructions meant, assuming that when you downloaded the JRE for Windows7, you installed it under "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6". If not please use the full path to the directory you used instead.

Best,
-Ayman

Thx a lot! It worked but now I have the same problem as the other guy see
" https://simtk.org/forum/message.php?msg_id=2740 "

So here is my next stupid question:
How do I unistall the JDK (I can't find it in my programs) and where can I find the 32 bit version (I looked on the java download site but I can't find it or I looked over it)

Thx!

Wim

Wim,

For uninstall, you need to find the equivalent of the Add/Remove Programs from ControlPanel, select the version you want removed and click remove or uninstall.

For installing the correct version, just go to the standard download place for Java
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
and use Windows instead of Windows 64.

Please let me know how that goes,
-Ayman

Hi! I'm having the same error problems. I'd already downloaded the JRE6 update 20 and followed the win7 instructions, but nothing seems to work. How should I proceed?

I'd the same error problems the guys already related.

thanks support team

Hi Giovanni,

I got the same problem.
(You find the solution in the following thread https://simtk.org/tracker/index.php?fun ... 1&atid=322)

The registry (JavaSoft etc.) was still the same if I install the new Java-Update or OpenSim again.

So I just delete two things:

1. the folder .opensim (somewhere under your C:Documents and
Settings$your_user_name)
2. Entries in the registry regarding your preferences.
KEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/JavaSoft/Prefs/org/opensim

If I remove both OpenSim works correctly.
