Axis of rotation of the ankle joint of Gait2394 model

Hi,
I am interested in how to calculate the rotation axis of the ankle joint in gait2394 model so I read the paper "New least squares solutions for estimating the average center of rotation and the axis rotation, Journal of Biomechanics 35 (2002) 87-93 ". But I'm confused with some mathematical notation when I am implementing the algorithm. For example, in equation(4), (vp)^2_bar, is this a 3x3 matrix or a scalar?
