Working with/editing VTP geometry files

Post by Ross Miller » Mon May 25, 2020 3:38 am

Hi all,

I'm interested in editing bone geometry files, for example cutting the tibia/fibula mid-shaft to animate a model with below-knee amputation. The files I'm working with are VTP. Could anyone recommend any software or codes (or broadly speaking just general approaches) for doing this? I have a free program "ParaView" that can view VTP files but doesn't seem like it edits the geometries, or at least it is not obvious to me how to do this.

Thanks!
Ross

Hello Ross,

Meshlab (http://www.meshlab.net/) has lots of tools to manipulate meshes, I have used it in the past to 'cleanup' meshes from VTP files so I'm sure you can whatever manipulation you want in it.

Please let us know how that goes,

Best regards,

Thanks Ayman. Meshlab looks like it will work nicely.

Hi Ross,

May I ask you how you loaded the vtp file into Meshlab? I also want to edit the tibia for my research in transtibial amputation, but I have problems to load the vtp file into Meshlab. Can you please help me?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Annemiek,

I think Meshlab can't read VTP files directly. I haven't done this recently but I think I read the VTP files into ParaView then did "Save Data..." which had an option of exporting to STL, then loaded the STL into Meshlab.

Hi Ross,

Thank you for your response. I will download Paraview and try if that works. Thanks!

https://www.paraview.org/Wiki/Beginning_Filters

You can use the clip filter in Para view to cut geometries ^.

A couple other mesh editing softwares listed here:
