FD in CMC

Forward dynamics during CMC uses activation and musculo-tendon contraction dynamics.
I find differential equations describing these two dynamics in Thelen D. ,,Adjustment of muscle mechanics model parameters to simulate dynamic contractions in older adults”. Journal of Biomechanics. 2003; vol. 125: 70–77.
1. In activation dynamics I don't understand how excitation u is calculated: from previous phase(StaticOpt) there is only muscular activation a;
2. In musculo-tendon contraction dynamics I don't understand how muscle forces are product (then used in equations of motion for accelerations).
There is other paper where could I find these equations?
3. what are the differences in muscle forces produced in SO and in FD?
thanks,
Bruno
