FAQ question: Model building/modification

What changes can be made to OpenSim models in the GUI? Is it possible to build a model from scratch?

As of OpenSim 1.0, the only model modifications available from the GUI are changes to muscles.

The GUI is not yet in place to let you add degrees of freedom (coordinates) and adjust their properties, or the properties of any other model components other than muscles.

You will need to edit the XML model file (.osim) in a text editor to define new coordinates, segments and joints.

If you have access to a SIMM license, you can make your model in SIMM and then import it into OpenSim.

We understand that this is a limitation and we're working on implementing more of this modeling functionality in OpenSim.

It is possible to build my own model in OpenSim 2.0. For example, a simple 1 degree of freedom model of the ankle with only two muscles?
