Upper Extremity model for exercise modeling/simulation

Post by Wayne Johnson » Mon Mar 19, 2018 2:25 pm

I am looking for an upper extremity (UE) model to explore joint loading during the kettlebell swing exercise. The exercise involves swinging a weight using a double handed grip from between the legs to above the head with arms extended throughout the entire swing. I am considering the MoBL UE model available here: https://simtk.org/projects/upexdyn, but have read that the Holzbaur model upon which the MoBL UE model is based, is not well suited for high speed or high load motions. Are there other UE models to consider for simulations of dynamic activities?

One of the "limitations" of the model is its constraints. This means that you can use the model in a forward dynamics setting, such as Computed Muscle Controls instead of Static Optimization, thus simulation will be slower. If the swing is fast enough the muscles may not be able to produce the required force, requiring residual forces. However, you can try to use the model and see whether simulations are failing and why.
