John CT, Anderson FC, Higginson JS, Delp SL. Stabilization of Walking by Intrinsic Muscle Properties Revealed in a Three-Dimensional Muscle-Driven Simulation, CMBBE, in press. (2011)

Provides detailed simulation of walking and deviations from walking trajectory due to disturbances, with and without intrinsic muscle properties

This study generated and analyzed a highly accurate three-dimensional simulation of walking to show that intrinsic properties of muscle help resist deviations from normal walking trajectories when disturbances are applied to the human body. This is important because other neural feedback mechanisms have a delayed response to disturbances.
