Summary:
IK Analysis Not Working in Tutorial 3

Detailed description
Hi Ayman and Ajay,

I just worked on OpenSim Tutorial 3 interactively in lecture this morning (OpenSim 3.1) with about 30 students, and many of them could not get IK to run on their laptops. I also could not get it to run on the computer in the lecture room.

After running model scaling in the tutorial, we got to the IK step, loaded the settings file, and then when I clicked on the tab to show how the weights were set, none of the markers was selected, and all of the weights were zero. I tried re-loading the settings file but still had the same problem. I then shut down OpenSim and tried the whole process again and still had the same problem. Next I shut down OpenSim again, repeated the whole process, and tried running the IK analysis again WITHOUT clicking on the Weights tab first. That time IK worked finally.

All of these issues were encountered with the Tutorial 3 gait2354 model and Setup settings files.

I haven't done a rigorous QA test to figure out the exact circumstances that make the IK analysis run, but there is definitely a serious bug in the OpenSim 3.1 IK analysis tool that would be worth investigating. I do know that if I load the gait2354 model, load the ScaleModel settings file, run the Scale Model tool, turn off visibility for the original model, set to zero the model offset for the scaled model, open the IK tool, load the settings file, and then click on the weights, there are no weights set.

Let me know if you have further questions, and it would be great to get an update on this issue. I have filed a bug report through the OpenSim 3.1 GUI.

B.J.

Please check latest beta (u5) and close if fixed.

Thanks

B.J.,
The problem has been fixed in 3.2. Even in 3.1, if you change the setup file to include the <IKTaskSet> internally rather than read it from a separate file then IK will work.

Thanks for reporting and please let us know if you see any problems.
