Currently, followers are listed alphabetically. To help build community and encourage followers to collaborate with other followers who are geographically close to them, it would be helpful to display the followers on a map based on their listed home institution. This would be an alternate view when exploring the list of followers and so there'd be a link at the top saying "Map View" and in the map view page, there'd be a link saying "List View."
Because the data on home institution was not collected with this intent, there is no uniformity in how it was entered, so we will only map an individual with a clearly defined home institution. Everyone else will go into a bucket on the map titled "Unknown location." Ideally, we find some open-source API (Google maps?) where we can enter the home institution name and get back some coordinates to put on the map. There should be some zooming capability so that you might only have one dot (with a label for the number of followers) for a state when looking at the U.S. map view, but zooming in, you would then distinguish how many followers say in San Francisco vs. LA area, etc.
Only public followers would be included on the map. |
