Domain Specific Usage
Mathematics: "The difference between a true value and an estimate, or approximation, of that value". 3
Engineering: error: a recognizable deficiency in any phase or activity of modeling or experimentation that is not due to lack of knowledge (e.g., choosing an incorrect material property for use in the computational model, recording a gain incorrectly during a sensor calibration, incorrectly defining a data format statement in the code).
