Immediate Action Items:

Notes:

  1. Ahmet reminded the collaborators to add their team members to the SimTK project site. This will help build up a community.
  2. Ahmet asked each team about their progress on documenting model development specifications.
    • University of Denver team is running behind; they feel like they can provide the document by mid-August.
    • The group from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute can get the document ready before then. They need a week to get closer. Thor noted a few challenges related to what we were doing as part of the whole project, specifically describing activities that we may have taken for granted.
    • Cleveland State University team feels like they can be done in a week.
    • Hospital for Special Surgery team aims for end of July. Shady noted that the structure of the document is there. Yet, they were struggling how much detail to put in.
    • Cleveland Clinic team can get the document in a few weeks but feels more comfortable with an extension.
    • The participants decided the submission deadline as August 15, 2018. Ahmet thinks about catching up again in early August.
  3. The work on manuscript to document knee workflows has been muted to prioritize writing specifications.
    • Jason asked the collaborators to see if they have an understanding of the scope and the goal of the paper. Carl noted that as he understood, the purpose is to highlight the variability in workflows in modeling and simulation and as a function of this variability to justify the needs of this project. Jason agreed.
    • Ahmet wondered if we should start working on evaluating the selected manuscripts. Each manuscript (9 total) will be reviewed by two people. This may work well as we try to finalize the documentation of model development specifications as the reviewers may be more aware of what needs to be included to enhance reproducibility potential.
    • Carl also wondered about how we imagine the results and discussion section of the paper, i.e. what the final product is. Jason has some ideas to break down the workflow into general components. The evaluation of the workflows in modeling manuscripts will be raw data for the article. This needs to be synthesized to ensure that the message is captured and delivered effectively.
    • A grading or a rubric to summarize the reproducibility potential (as perceived by the evaluators) may be useful. Pete noted existing rubrics, e.g. from the FDA and the group discussed that the rubric we utilize about level of evidence should focus on reproducibility, e.g. Reproducibility Potential Assessment Matrix, rather than credibility.
    • Thor also noted the need for benchmark data, mark up languages, so on to treat different studies. Ahmet mentioned that this will likely emerge as a discussion point in the article.
    • Ahmet asked Jason when can he send materials and forms to assist the evaluation process. He will think about our discussions in this meeting during the next week or two. He will also forward the outline with purpose statement.
  4. The participants discussed upcoming outreach.
    • Carl submitted the ORS workshop proposal. He will reach out to industry and he is open to suggestions. ORS will decide upon workshops during fall. Carl hopes to send them an update before they meet. Ahmet also recommended Carl to follow up with Tina as well. ORS submissions will be due August 27, 2018. The meeting will be in February in Austin, TX. The participants hope to submit abstracts from their laboratories, which will also promote knee modeling and simulation and the project.
    • Carl, Kevin, and Thor will be at the World Congress. They will likely catch up there. Thor mentioned embedding slides related to the project. He also asked about reaching out the other investigators. Ahmet encouraged to do so. BJ Fregly will be at World Congress; Thor may reach out to him.
    • Jason is preparing to go to VPH 2018 to present the project. This is an overview talk and may feed into a publication describing the project. Carl thinks that this may work well as a short communication in Journal of Biomechanics. Ahmet asked Jason to pay attention to the feedback from VPH 2018 audience. This may justify writing up such a manuscript. Jason is not volunteering for this manuscript; not yet at least. Ahmet will think about it as well.
    • Thor mentioned that Nynke will present work related to the project in Australasia Biomechanics Meeting in December 2018.
    • The team wondered if anyone will be at ASB 2018. None of the participants are planning to go.
  5. Ahmet went over action items from the previous meeting. All have been addressed.
  6. Other discussion points included:
    • Will had a couple questions about Natural Knee Data from Denver group. He asked about the availability of femoral head digitization data. Kevin noted that these should exist. He will check the disseminated data and his files. If not there, he will provide the data. Ahmet will update the download package accordingly. He also asked about how patella coordinate system was established in Natural Knee Data. Ahmet mentioned that this does not have relevance for the model development phase but will be important during the model calibration phase where anatomical data need to be registered to mechanical testing data. Denver group will look into this.
    • The participants discussed the tentative plan to visit Denver in December 2018. All teams seem to be available to do so. Thor may be able to swing by but he may have a conflict with the Australasian Biomechanics Meeting. He will definitely join by Skype.
    • Thor asked about NIH approval of second year funding. Ahmet noted that the documents were submitted but an official update was not received. He encouraged Thor to remind him regularly to make sure we follow up in multiple fronts.
    • Thor started a discussion about OAI data and how to access it. His group is interested in neural network based segmentation. Other teams are also interested in similar approaches as well. Our collaboration may lead into activities to tackle this data resources effectively.
