Immediate Action Items:

Notes:

  1. Auckland team submitted all their Model Development packages. Ahmet will organize and disseminate.
  2. Ahmet asked about the status of Model Calibration specifications document. The team from University of Denver has been working on it. End of July is a tight deadline. They can deliver when push comes to show. A mid-August to end of August deadline is more ideal. Shady from Hospital for Special Surgery has been working on the document. He plans to submit a draft to Carl by the end of this month. Mid-August is a reasonable deadline. Cleveland State University is further behind. They have an outline, end of July delivery date will not be good. Ahmet looked at the draft of Cleveland Clinic specifications; he needs to work on it as well. Mid- to late August delivery is agreeable by all teams. Ahmet will remind the teams by mid-August by e-mail and phone call, if necessary.
  3. Ahmet also asked how the teams feel about the calibration process. There were some discussions on updating any model changes as protocol deviations to the Model Development or incorporating into Model Calibration. Ahmet recommended the teams to view Model Development as completed. Any model changes are likely to be in response to new earmarked data of the Model Calibration phase and they should be incorporated as Model Calibration specifications. This approach will also capture the evolution of the model as it goes through modeling and simulation lifecycle. The key is documentation.
  4. Carl has been working on compiling flash opinions as a section to manuscript on ORS workshop. He also did a compilation of the survey but asked someone else to do it again independently. He may recruit a summer intern to do this. Otherwise, he will ask the collaborating teams to do so. Denver group and Cleveland Clinic team noted that they may be able to help. Carl should reach out if help is needed.
  5. Jason has not done much about the review of knee modeling studies for reproducibility. He got additional reviews from Carl and Shady. He is ready to compile and write a draft.
  6. Ahmet sent an e-mail too Thor asking about Model Development manuscript. He did not get a respond. His goal is to wrap this up by the end of the year.
  7. Carl reached out to Ioannidis, who gave a keynote on reproducibility of science in previous ORS meeting. They had an e-mail exchange before and Carl wanted to keep him in the loop by sending him the manuscript on deciphering the art of modeling. Ahmet mentioned that our project is getting attention and we can inform our institutions about that. He mentioned that Jennie Larkin from NIH used our project as a case study for a presentation at Mobilizing Computable Biomedical Knowledge conference.
  8. There are promotional opportunities in the upcoming CMBBE meeting and IMAG/MSM meeting in March. ORS abstract deadline is August 24. Ahmet wondered if we can have a follow up workshop on the modeling workflow. Carl mentioned that the workshop deadline has passed. Nonetheless, if we have a critical mass of abstracts, sessions can be organized accordingly. Pete noted that we may be able to give an update as part of a section. The participants agreed that we may need to submit abstracts related to our project and follow up. Among 5 groups and 2 models, 10 abstracts can be submitted, e.g. abstracts based on what individual teams did and abstracts based on group comparisons. Carl will look into getting a session and inform when we should get abstracts ready. Don, Pete and some undergraduates are working on comparing geometries; some abstract my be related to these. This will also feed into Thor's manuscript. Ahmet recommended that this can be its own manuscript as well, i.e. from a science of science perspective.
  9. Ahmet went over action items from Denver gathering. Many of these are long term and are related to ongoing activities.
  10. The participants discussed the possibility to have a meeting at CMBBE conference. The presentations are on Wednesday, late afternoon. Carl requested to meet Wednesday evening as he will be leaving on Thursday.
