Immediate Action Items:

Notes:

  1. Discuss immediate action items from the last meeting.
    • Ahmet sent Robb and Craig anatomical landmarks on the knee mesh used to generate the model coordinate system. He needs to provide the information to Tara as well for generation of new pivot shift trajectories (see notes on the next agenda item). Consequently, Tara was not able to work on simplified pivot shift trajectory to apply to the model.
    • Craig uploaded the samples from magnetic resonance images acquired for oks007. The data seem to be in order.
    • Ahmet, Craig, and Snehal still need to meet to discuss convergence of Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 model. Ahmet noted that it may be a good idea to identify simulation parameters such as tolerances and modifications in the model such as material property changes to establish reliable, justifiable, and robust convergence of the model during simulations.
    • Snehal wrote to Paul Saluan about the developments in the pivot shift manuscript work. He asked to be kept in the loop as the project evolves.
    • Snehal has been in the process of testing foam samples under compression at 20%/s and 100%/s strain rates. Mismatches in desired and applied rates has been noted. The group decided on characterizing the capacity of the Mach-1 machine for applying a move command for different amplitudes of displacement (0.1 mm and 1.0 mm) and at different velocities (1,2,4,8,16 mm/s). Ahmet advised to extract instantaneous velocity (at mid time point) and average velocity to compare against desired velocity. Snehal will follow up.
    • Callan got an account at SimTk. Ahmet added Callan as a team member.

  2. Discuss pivot shift simulation study development.
    • Ahmet noted that anatomical landmarks can be easily obtained from the model using PreView or PostView. This can be a more reliable alternative than using the mesh points acquired during model development. Ahmet and Tara will meet to obtain coordinates of anatomical landmarks that match closely of those used in pivot shift testing studies conducted by Robb and Tara.

    • Snehal will add references to the Introduction section of the manuscript. She will continue drafting the Results and Discussion sections.
  3. Discuss potential simulation studies and development of related specifications.
    • Ahmet asked all team members to start drafting experimentation manuscripts.
      • Craig will lead the manuscript on magnetics resonance imaging. Additional work such as quantitative description of models, generation of sample geometries, and clinical grading of the knees may need to be conducted to increase the potential impact of the manuscript.
      • Tara will lead the development of a manuscript on tibiofemoral joint testing.
      • Robb will lead the development of a manuscript on patellofemoral joint testing.
    • Snehal requested to conduct a modeling and simulation study using Open Knee(s) from start to end. She proposed cruciate ligament modeling as a project. This study will be informed by preliminary work by Katie Stemmer and this time rely on Open Knee(s). The whole modeling process; MRI to segmentation to geometry and mesh, registration, tissue testing to constitutive modeling, robotics data to time histories of joint kinematics-kinetics as loading and boundary conditions. The ultimate goal is to end the work with a scholarly publication. Ahmet requested Snehal to devise a timeline spanning two years to accomplish all these. First goal is to write down the scientific purpose of the study.
  4. Decide immediate action items for the next meeting.
    • See Immediate Action Items above.
  5. Other.
    • Ahmet noted that he has been working on an alternative manuscript for Journal of Knee Surgery. The article relies on Open Knee(s) - Generation 1 experience and will be submitted within this week.
