Date: December 1, 2015
Time: 2:00 PM EST
Means: In person meeting
Attendees:
- Ahmet Erdemir
- Tammy Owings
- Tara Bonner
- Callan Gillespie
- John-Eric Jelovsek (Multidisciplinary Simulation Center)
Agenda:
- Discuss immediate action items from past meetings.
- Identification of surgical tools and their handling.
- Quarterly progress report.
- Decide immediate action items for next meeting.
- Other.
Immediate Action Items:
- Ahmet
- Follow up with Siemens to acquire more detailed ultrasound probe drawings including external casing curvature.
- Write up the quarterly progress report.
- Tammy
- Reach out to clinicians to learn interpretation of musculoskeletal ultrasound images.
- Identify training opportunities for musculoskeletal ultraound imaging.
- Robb
- Follow up with John-Eric Jelovsek about surgical tools and their handling.
Robb, Tara & Callan
- Continue working on software implementation to collect force transducer data and signaling for ultrasound system synchronization.
- Document ultrasound system and force transducer in the relevant wiki page on infrastructure.
- Eric
- Identify colleagues for Tammy to get advice on musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging.
Notes:
- Discuss immediate action items from past meetings.
- Ahmet still needs to follow up with Siemens to acquire more detailed ultrasound probe drawings.
- Tammy and Ahmet went over the sample ultrasound DICOM images. Many data collection parameters are accessible as part of DICOM metadata. Tammy prepared a collection of sample shots for anyone who may be interested in looking at them. The group discussed the need for using the curved probe. As Ahmet and Tammy noted, the resolution is not necessarily desirable. Nonetheless, the probe may be needed for deep tissue imaging.
- Tammy identified some training opportunities for ultrasound imaging. Yet they did not seem to be relevant to interpreting musculoskeletal imaging. John-Eric will identify a few colleagues (physicians and ultrasound techs) for Tammy to get instructions.
- The group asked Eric for an update about surgical tools and their handling. After a discussion, four types of major tools were identified for investigation: knife (scalpel), scissor, pick-up (forceps), and retractor. A generally agreeable tool within each category needs to be selected. As Eric noted, for as a pick-up tool a forceps with or without teeth can be used. Ahmet mentioned that as long as we keep consistency and get a generally acceptable tool, more detailed features may not be that important. Eric will try to identify most general purpose tool for each tool type. While not time sensitive, the group also mentioned the possibility to schedule a time to see surgeons use the tools.
- Robb, Tara, and Callan have continued working on software implementation to collect force transducer data and signaling for ultrasound system synchronization. The documentation of the ultrasound system and force transducer in the relevant wiki page on infrastructure is an immediate need.
- Identification of surgical tools and their handling.
- See relevant discussion above.
- Quarterly progress report.
- Ahmet went over the required contents of the progress report. He can use the information available in the wiki to write the progress report. It is imperative to update the wiki in a timely manner for him to access the necessary documentation. He will prepare and submit the report in the following week.
- Decide immediate action items for next meeting.
- See Immediate Action Items above.
- Other.
- Ahmet noted that Benjamin Landis has accepted the offer to work as an engineer for the project. He will start on December 14, 2015. He will mostly focus on the modeling work and potentially on the automation of ultrasound image analysis.
