Immediate Action Items:

Notes:

  1. Discuss immediate action items from past meetings.
    • Ahmet will set up a meeting with Ryan Klatte to discuss the design of ultrasound probe - force transducer attachment and the handle.
    • Tammy will conduct mock-up data collection on Friday. The mock-up session will include ultrasound imaging of all anatomical locations and anthropometric measurements.
    • Tammy contacted David Leifer to evaluate the possibility of obtaining cadaver specimens through the Surgical Skills Lab of the Cleveland Clinic. She was informed that we can access to whole bodies as long as we conduct our work in their laboratory. This will require taking the ultrasound system there. The MRI can be collected on these specimens but should be done in the Cleveland Clinic. Ahmet recommended Tammy to contact Snehal Chokhandre for information relevant to ordering of cadaver specimens. He asked that we acquire a cadaver leg and a cadaver arm to fine tune cadaver experimentation protocols and MRI settings. Ahmet also asked Tammy to look into snowboard/ski bags, which will be useful for transportation of the cadaver specimens to the imaging facility.
    • Ben has started comparing the results of simple model when using hexahedral and tetrahedral meshes. He needed to increase the tetrahedral mesh density for solution accuracy. This resulted in long simulations. Ben will try reduce the size of the region of interest to decrease mesh size. He will work with Ahmet to learn about high performance computing resources in the Cleveland Clinic.
    • Following the discussion with Ahmet last week, Ben feels comfortable to work with the wiki and the repository. He started filling in the wiki page on simple model of indentation.
    • Robb identified various sensors for determining probe orientation. Price ranges vary significantly. Ahmet recommended sensors with readily available drivers, i.e. can work out of the box and minimize Robb's efforts for implementation. He also advised to look at dynamic accuracy, which seems to be around 2 degrees for most sensors. Following discussions, the group agreed that the sensor from VectorNav Technologies, which is approximately $1000, is favorable. Robb and Tara will follow up with purchasing.

    • Robb still needs to upload a sample ultrasound image with the synchronization signal. He also needs to document the settings required to display the signal.
  2. Readiness for in vivo testing.
    • Work on data collection system is ongoing:
      • An orientation/tilt sensor was identified and will be purchased (see relevant discussion above).
      • Wiring for synchronization is in the works.
      • Tara was informed about the specifications of output data file for force measurement system.
      • Last week, Robb and Ahmet had a discussions on naming of data files for in vivo testing. The labeling allows prescription of subject id, anatomical segment, location, and test type. Robb will document the data labeling scheme.
      • Last week, Robb and Ahmet met and discussed specifications for subject data file, which would include data collected by Tammy during testing, e.g. subject height, weight, anthropometric measures. It will also provide a checklist of collected imaging data by referring the data file names. Robb will work on the interface to create, read/write, and edit such files. Ahmet recommended that XML can be used for describing subject data and trials conducted. Tara will incorporate this file to force measurement data collection that can automatically populate the trial checklist.
    • Ahmet needs to meet with Ryan Klatte in the engineering design group for manufacturing of fixtures to hold different ultrasound probes.
    • Tammy set up the date for a mock-up trial to understand the operational burden of in vivo testing.
    • The group will acquire cadaver specimens to fine tune in vitro testing protocols. These specimens will also be used for repeatability tests.
  3. Decide immediate action items for next meeting.
    • See Immediate Action Items above.
  4. Other.
    • Ahmet mentioned that the applicants for the research associate and engineer positions declined the offers. He will continue working on recruitment.
