Immediate Action Items:

Notes:

  1. Manuscripts update.
    • No update from journal on the instrumented ultrasound manuscript.
    • No update from journal on the in vivo data manuscript.
    • Tyler submitted an extended abstract to IEEE EMBS 2018 on instrumentation of surgical tools.
    • Rici has been filling in sections of the manuscript on tissue thickness comparison and another on in vivo surface stiffness.
  2. Data dissemination update.
    • Rici has reached to Stanford University team to provide feedback on in vitro data management branch. She is still waiting for their response. Joy has been out of office following a grant submission at Stanford University.
  3. In vitro testing status.
    • Tyler collected additional data to iterate on strain measurement parameters. His new settings seem to work better, i.e. less loss of information.
    • A new indenter was designed to replace the retractor for the act of indentation during surgical tool operation.
    • For tissue testing, a new compression tool was built for fat compression. This will allow using samples with larger cross-sectional area, therefore higher forces increasing signal to noise ratio that has been an issue for small samples.
  4. Modeling & simulation status.

    • Ben is on vacation.
    • Ahmet still needs to define final products for lumped tissue models. He is also interested in defining final products for layered tissue models.
  5. Review of immediate action items from past meeting.
    • All action items were related to the agenda items; refer to discussions above.
  6. Decide immediate action items for next meeting.
    • See Immediate Action Items above.
  7. Other.
    • Deadline for Military Healthcare Research Symposium is approaching, March 16, 2018. Ahmet is interested in submitting one or two abstracts, possibly on surgical tool force measurement, in vivo surface stiffness, and its relation to thicknesses of tissue layers. Ahmet asked Tyler and Rici to attend the conference on behalf of the team.
    • Ahmet returned back from the in-process review meeting at Fort Detrick, MD. An initial recommendation was to focus on the statistical analysis of experimental data to justify heavy modeling work. He also had the impression that a no cost extension will not be an issue and he was recommended to submit a request sooner than later.
    • Ariel Schwartz joined the team. Ariel is a mechanical engineer and will likely work on modeling aspects of the project.
